University of South Carolina Campus Village

“Being based in DC, the remote scout set up by the photo team was of immense help in moving this project forward. It allowed both myself and my marketing colleague in Colorado to collaborate with one another and the Creative Sources team in real time. In under an hour, we had conducted a comprehensive site walk, identified perspectives that best showcased our work, and developed a detailed photography framework that allowed the CSP team to hear what was important to me. After receiving the final images, I can say they’ve exceeded expectations.”

As the largest development in the University’s 222-year history, many options for interesting and informative compositions were evaluated to create an effective library of images.

The views above featuring the clocktower and pedestrian promenade were photographed during late afternoon and twilight from the same vantage point. The images reflect the changing student experience as day transitions to evening.
To efficiently coordinate with our WDG Architecture team in Colorado and DC, we turned to scouting this Columbia, SC project remotely via live, on-site video conferencing.  Leveraging technology, we were able to walk through the project, evaluate opportunities and challenges, formulate a strategy, and refine the shot list for a successful photo session.  This process allowed the entire team to view the project and offer real-time input on composition and timing of each perspective.
For the perspective above, to ensure a pristine landscape in time to take advantage of the sun position, the photo team assisted the facilities crew in spreading pine straw within the beds.
This axial view of the main east-west promenade highlights the central clocktower feature as a campus landmark.

For this initial photo session within the residential complex, the photo team was asked by USC not to fly a drone.  As a solution, in order to elevate the camera for the twilight perspective above, showing the relationship of the buildings to the Village Square and pedestrian promenades, we went old-school.  We employed a 24’ tall camera stand for several of the images (shown here on top of our vehicle)! The elevated viewpoint provides the viewer with an enhanced understanding of the interrelationship amongst buildings, pathways, greenspace, and courtyard.
