We require from buildings two kinds of goodness: first, doing their practical duty well, then that they be graceful and pleasing in doing it.
John Ruskin (English Writer)
As renowned architectural photographers, we are privileged to witness the remarkable advancements in engineering knowledge and materials available to designers today. The construction of commercial buildings has taken on an artistic quality, where architecture becomes a grand scale sculpture.
Contemporary architects have the freedom to explore various styles and embrace postmodern sensibilities. With computer-aided design and precision construction techniques, buildings are brought to life in three-dimensional form. From concrete structures adorned with glass or concrete screens to asymmetric facades and daring cantilevered sections, the concept of “form follows function” is being redefined. While modern techniques dominate, traditional architectural styles and methods still hold their place in our designer’s toolbox. We pay homage to time-honored practices, such as variations of the post-and-lintel structure, reminiscent of a modern Stonehenge, or the classical influences of Roman arches and Greek colonnades.
Our approach as experienced architecture photographers encompasses an appreciation for both the uniqueness of the design and its integration within the community. Our work with architects in the commercial architecture space has given us the opportunity to capture the interplay of light with materials, how humans interact with the spaces, and how the building’s form evokes our aesthetic sensibilities. Through our eyes, we seek to redefine office building exteriors as magnificent “sculptures on a grand scale.”
